How to Care for Your Minimalist Footwear to Maximize Longevity

Minimalist shoes are built for freedom. But even the most flexible soles need a bit of care to stay that way. A few minutes of mindful cleaning can keep your shoes fresh, breathable, and ready to move wherever life takes you.

At Splay, we design shoes to support natural movement, not hide it under layers of padding. To keep that barefoot feel alive, your shoes need the same attention you’d give any other essential piece of gear. With a little regular care, your Splays stay soft, flexible, and adventure-ready for miles to come.

Basic Shoe Cleaning Techniques

Splay shoes are constructed from flexible, foot-friendly materials that mimic natural movement. The wide toe boxes and natural structure keep your feet comfortable for long use. However, long use means you need to clean it now and then.

Using a stiff scrub brush or machine wash can ruin the breathability or shape of your shoes. With proper care, your shoes will continue to be flexible, odor-free, and will continue to mimic the barefoot experience.

How To Clean Shoes Without Damaging Them:

Step 1: Remove the laces and insoles first.

Step 2: Brush off loose dirt and dust using a soft brush or cloth.

Step 3: For canvas or nylon uppers, spot clean using mild soap and warm water, scrubbing gently.

Step 4: After cleaning, stuff the shoes with socks, tissue paper, or a shoe tree to help them dry in the correct shape and prevent warping.

Step 5: Let them air dry at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or heat sources like dryers or radiators.

And never throw barefoot shoes in a washing machine or dryer. That’s like taking your yoga mat to a car wash.

Drying: Do It Right to Prevent Warping

Never toss barefoot shoes in the dryer

If your shoes get wet, stuff them with newspaper or a dry cloth to absorb moisture. Let them air dry at room temperature; no sunbathing, no hairdryers, no heaters. Rotate pairs so each gets time to breathe.

Storage: Keeping Your Shoes Adventure-Ready

Store your Splays in a cool, airy place and not a sealed plastic box (that’s an odor trap). Use shoe trees or paper stuffing to help them keep their shape, especially for models like REV or RUNNER V1.

Traveling? Slip them in cloth bags or wrap them in a T-shirt. It prevents scuffs and keeps dust away. Add cedar inserts if you want that “fresh forest morning” smell.

How to Prolong the Life of Your Minimalist Shoes

Want your shoes to last longer? Treat them right every day.

  • Use shoes as intended. No mountain treks in your slip-ons.

  • Clean regularly, not just when they’re filthy.

  • Keep them odor-free with baking soda or cedar chips.

Good care isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency.

Clean Shoes = Natural Movement, Day After Day

Keeping your shoes in shape keeps you in shape. Clean them, dry them right, store them smartly, and you’ll feel the difference in every stride.

Foot health literally starts from the ground up. A little care keeps your minimalist shoes (and feet) strong, free, and ready to move naturally.

So go on, give your Splays a quick spa day. They’ve carried you through miles, workouts, and errands. It’s the least you can do. Shop barefoot shoes from Splay
